Shropshire History

Shropshire

Watercourses

Return

to Index

Apart from the many canals of Shropshire, there are numerous rivers and streams in the county. Only one river is navigable and that is the River Severn. Details appear elsewhere for its bridges and ferries. Watercourses were essential for providing water for personal consumption, as well as working waterwheels for mills and factories. The gazetteer below only includes those watercourses occurring wholly in Shropshire or, if not, that section that passes through.

Between Highley (SO754824) and Arley (SO754809) it marks the border between Shropshire and Worcestershire. There is a public right of navigation over the Shropshire section but this stretch of the river has little traffic, other than small pleasure boats. It has a tidal bore caused by high tides being funnelled up the Severn estuary into a wave that travels rapidly upstream against the river current. The largest bores occur in spring, but smaller ones can be seen throughout the year. The bore is accompanied by a rapid rise in water level which continues for about one and a half hours after the bore has passed.

A stream parallel to the road leading towards the Holy Trinity Church was called Shit Brook by inhabitants because it was used as an open sewer. In the 14th Century it was culverted and the stream was paved over to make a lane. The newly diverted stream then ran around the Holy Trinity Church and followed its original course down the valley to the River Severn.
